SIU Carbondale Culture of Respect Committee

SIU Carbondale is a partner with the Culture of Respect ®, Ending Campus Sexual Violence, a NASPA initiative designed to ensure institutions create policies and programs that support survivors, prevent sexual violence, and communicate that violence is unacceptable.

The SIU Carbondale Culture of Respect Committee consists of various campus and community stakeholders focused on improving coordination between community leaders and service providers to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking and to ensure a coordinated response. The committee addresses the following as related to gender-based violence:

  • Best practices for prevention, awareness, education, and response.
  • Comprehensive policy and procedures in accordance with federal and State law.
  • Collaboration and information sharing among university professionals, community-based organizations, and local law enforcement.

The committee meets monthly throughout the academic year and as needed during the summer months. Committee membership is frequently reviewed and additional members are added as needed. In addition to the students appointed to the Culture of Respect Committee, the chair appoints a student advisory panel to provide recommendations to the committee. Students interested in serving on the student advisory panel can email Abby Bilderback, Ph.D., Abbyg@siu.edu for additional information.
